Rae on the Street (2024)

As we say goodbye to 2024 and brace for the uncertainty ahead, I am grateful for art and community — and for my activist immigrant grandmother who came of age in the tenements of the Lower East Side, inspiring me to follow her stories.

Rae on the Street  is a series of stills from the Paulina film-in-process. These images draw from a scene channeling my grandmother Rae –appearing dressed as I remember her – as she wanders/ haunts the now-transformed former site of the Lower East Side tenements, her former home. Filmed by director/cinematographer Jonathan Bogarin.

In several images, she lingers near the first street where she lived in the US, long since razed. In one, a meal truck from the Henry Street Settlement serendipitously passes by.

This series is available as signed 8 x 11 archival prints for supporters of the Paulina film ($100 and up) who select this as an option — your image from the series will be personally selected by me.

About the Paulina film: I was investigating the mysteries of my grandmother's past in Poland when my life became unexpectedly intertwined with the story of a stranger—a Polish Jewish woman named Paulina. I take the audience on my journey between Poland and the US, the past and the present, to share this majestic story of lives drawn together by trajectories of loss and desire that carry across generations, continuing to heal and transform.
